CSC in Big Layoffs of European Staffers

California-based Computer Sciences Corp. plans to fire about 5,000 people, many of them in Europe.

That's where the firm's consulting and systems-integration business has struggled, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The firm has about 80,000 employees, worldwide.

CSC is expected to take a restructuring charge of a few hundred million dollars, most of it during the next 12 months.

The staff cuts come as CSC talks with a potential buyer, presumed to be a private equity group, in what could be a $10.6 billion deal.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. is handling the sale process.
